George Staab of Shirley in Suffolk County on Long Island was struck by a vehicle at approximately 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, April 4, officials confirmed. He was struck on the shoulder of the southbound side of the parkway near Rochelle Park, between exits 4 and 5 in the Bronx.

Staab, an electrician, was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where he was pronounced dead. He had been employed by the DOT since 2014.

According to a New York Daily News report, on Wednesday afternoon, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio stated that “this is just a sudden and horrible tragedy. I’m going to be talking with the family and I ask all New Yorkers to keep him and his family in our prayers.”

Several lanes were closed on the Hutchinson River Parkway while police investigated the crash, which does not appear to be criminal in nature. The parkway has since been reopened.
